North Star Regional Cultural Center

Executive Summary

The Buffalo Trail area of Kentucky, has a story to tell. It is the story of heroes and heroines, black and white, who made their contributions in courage, suffering, wit, and vision in many places and over the course of many years. It is the story of the Underground Railroad.

This story unfolds on 300 acres of property on the slopes of the majestic Ohio River, home to North Star Productions, Inc., a non-profit organization whose mission is to preserve the region's proud heritage and tell the courageous stories of a suppressed people. It is the story of a secret network of abolitionists and former slaves, the vast majority of whom remain nameless and faceless, but whose deeds served to free a nation and provided those of us living today with a new and promising tomorrow.

North Star's goals are to tell this incredible story, preserve the legacy of those who made personal sacrifices for freedom, educate the public about the achievements and contributions of people working to rise above oppression and better the human condition, preserve the stories' connection to the Ohio River and passage to freedom through preservation of the land, and to promote partnerships with organizations and educational institutions to further this mission.

The Board of Directors is comprised of a diverse group of people that share a common focus. Members reflect varied ethnic background including African American and Kentuckians and encompass a broad knowledge base and experiences. Click here for a  listing of the Board of Directors.

In addition to the outdoor amphitheatre overlooking the Ohio River, there will be a multi-purpose facility which will house offices, meeting rooms, classrooms, exhibit and retreat spaces for local and regional cultural groups. Another location will provide space for art displays and a sculpture garden. The Historical Committee is planning a North Star guided discovery trail which will lead visitors through a visual history of the Underground Railroad.

Architectural renderings and engineering drawings are presently being designed. The archeological plan under the partnership of Northern Kentucky University, The University of Kentucky and the State of Kentucky is being completed in phases, with road construction to begin this summer.

North Star is taking great care to consult with a diverse group of people as the story develops to ensure the accurate interweaving of historical fact and theatrical advancement. It is hoped that the essential element of the story will be one that will inspire collaborative learning and dialogue relating to current events and positive social values. In addition to becoming a high quality entertainment attraction with strong emotional appeal that will attract a great cross-section of the American and international public, the drama should become a valuable educational and cultural development tool that will give voice to the area's desire to create and promote state, national, and global awareness of the legacy of freedom in all places.
